Boosting a post vs running an ad in Ads Manager

A boosted post is a real ad, made in a few steps from something you already posted. It is fine for getting a post seen by more people nearby. If you want steady enquiries or sales, Ads Manager is usually the better tool, because it gives more goals, including sales, and more control over who sees the ad. The rule is simple. Boost for attention, use Ads Manager for customers.

Boosting is not a waste of money, and it is not the same as running a full ad. A boost takes a post you already published and pays to show it to more people. Ads Manager is Meta's full tool, where you build an ad from scratch and tell Meta what result you want. Which one is right depends on what you want people to do.

The difference in one table#

This table follows Meta's own help page on the difference, read on 6 October 2026.

Meta's summary is that boosted posts do not have as many customisation and detailed targeting options as an ad made in Ads Manager. A boosted post is still an ad, and Meta bills it the same way.

One rule of thumb#

Boost when you want a post to be seen. Use Ads Manager when you want steady enquiries or sales.

The reason is the goal. Meta shows your ad to the people most likely to do the thing you asked for. Ask for engagement and you get people who like and comment. Ask for leads and you get people who fill in forms. So choose the goal with care in either tool. A boost aimed at engagement finds people who tap the heart, and those are often different people from the ones who book.

Three examples#

A plumber wants calls about boiler servicing before winter. Likes are no use to him. He needs an ad with leads or calls as the goal. A boost can aim at those with fewer options. Ads Manager gives him the form and the control over the area.

A salon has posted a photo of a colour transformation and wants local people to see it and message for a slot. A boost with messages as the goal can do this well. The post already exists, and a message is the result she wants.

A small online shop wants sales of a new candle range. A boost can bring visitors. An Ads Manager campaign with sales as the goal can aim at people likely to buy. For a shop, the full tool is nearly always the better choice.

Is boosting a post worth it?#

It can be, for the right job.

  • Worth it: an event this weekend, a post that is already doing well, an offer you want locals to see, a quick test with a small sum.
  • Less suited: when you need enquiries and will judge the money by them. A boost aimed at engagement can show good reach and likes while the phone stays quiet.

We found no published test that measures a boost against an Ads Manager ad on the same budget. The guides that compare them, such as Reporting Ninja (2024) and Hootsuite (2024), agree that a boost is simpler and that Ads Manager offers more objectives, placements, formats and targeting.

What does each cost?#

We found no charge from Meta for using either tool. In both cases you set a budget and Meta spends it, and Meta's location fee applies where it exists, which is 2% for ads shown in the UK. Meta also says paying for a boost inside the Facebook or Instagram app on an iPhone or iPad can add an Apple service fee of 30%. For Instagram, Meta says you avoid it by using instagram.com in a web browser. The difference is in what the money buys. For how to set the amount, see How much should you spend on Facebook ads?. If a boost brought nothing, work through Facebook ads not working?.

What if Ads Manager feels like too much?#

That is the usual reason owners boost. You have three ways round it.

  1. Learn the short path. Running Facebook ads without an agency covers it in nine steps.
  2. Ask someone to set it up once and copy that campaign later.
  3. Use a tool that builds the campaign for you.

What Madder does#

Madder is the third way. You give it the link to your page. It reads what you sell, drafts a full campaign, builds the ads from photos you upload and approve, and creates the campaign in your own Meta ad account, paused. It appears in Ads Manager like any campaign, so nothing is hidden from you. You switch it on with a separate approval.

Madder does not boost posts, and it does not start from a post. It works with Meta only, and it aims a campaign at a country for now, not at a town. It is in early access with a waitlist. See How Madder works.

Questions people ask#

Is boosting a post a waste of money?

No, if you want more people to see a post. It gives fewer goals and less control than Ads Manager, so it is usually the weaker tool when you want enquiries or sales.

Is a boosted post the same as a Facebook ad?

A boosted post is a type of ad, and Meta bills it as one. It has fewer options than an ad made in Ads Manager. Meta's help page lists the differences in goals, targeting, formats and placements.

Can I boost a post on Instagram?

Yes. Meta's help page says you can choose more profile visits, website visits or messages as the goal when you boost an Instagram post.

Which is better for getting leads?

Ads Manager, in most cases. Meta's comparison says boosted posts focus on website clicks, Page engagement and local business promotions, while Ads Manager lets you choose objectives such as leads, app promotion and sales. Another Meta page says a boost can also bring messages, leads or calls.
