Facebook and Instagram ads for restaurants and cafés

A restaurant ad has a simple job. It reminds people within a short distance that you exist and gives them a reason to come this week. Keep the area tight, lead with one dish or one offer, and decide in advance what you will count, because Meta does not see who walks in unless you find a way to count it.

Nobody fills in a form to eat lunch. That is what makes restaurant and café ads different from ads for a plumber or a clinic. The ad's job is to put one good reason to visit in front of people who are close enough to come, and your job is to find a way to tell whether it worked.

Who should see the ad?#

People nearby, and almost nobody else. In Ads Manager you can drop a pin on your address and set a radius around it. Think in travel time.

  • A café or a takeaway: the streets people walk or the area you deliver to.
  • A neighbourhood restaurant: a short drive.
  • A destination restaurant: wider, and aimed at an occasion.

Meta says location targeting cannot be perfectly accurate, so a few people outside the circle will see the ad. Keep the circle a little smaller than you think you need.

What should the ad say?#

One thing. Choose the single strongest reason to come this week.

  • A dish, shown in a real photo taken at the pass or at the table.
  • An offer with an end date, such as a set lunch or a midweek deal.
  • An event, such as a tasting night, live music or a new menu.
  • Something new: an opening, a terrace, a brunch service.

Use your own photos and short video. Food filmed on a phone in your own room shows people what they will get.

Is boosting a post enough?#

For a restaurant, often yes. Meta says a boosted post can focus on website clicks, Page engagement and local business promotion. If your aim is to remind locals about this weekend's special, boosting a good post is the quickest way. If the boost screen does not let you set the area, create the ad in Ads Manager.

Use Ads Manager when you want a call button, a booking link with a specific goal, or tighter control of the area. See Boost post or Ads Manager?.

What do you count when there is no form?#

This is the hard part, and it is better to face it than to trust the wrong number.

  • Bookings through a link can be counted, if your booking system shows where they came from.
  • Calls can be counted roughly from your phone log during the campaign.
  • An offer code is the simplest honest measure. "Show this ad for a free coffee with breakfast" tells you exactly how many came.
  • Takings on the advertised days, compared with the same days in earlier weeks, give a rough picture.
  • Reach and likes tell you the ad was seen. They do not tell you anyone came.

Pick one of these before you start. If you cannot name what you will count, wait until you can.

What does it cost?#

Restaurant ads are among the cheaper ones to get clicked. WordStream's 2026 US report gives a typical cost of $0.45 a click for restaurants and food in campaigns aimed at website visits, with a click rate of 2.68%.

You may see a cost per lead of $3.16 quoted for restaurants. It comes from WordStream's 2025 report, where a category could rest on as few as two campaigns, and the 2026 report has no restaurant lead figure. We would not plan around it.

A sensible start is a small sum for one clear offer over one or two weeks, then a look at the count you chose. How to set a budget from your own figures is in How much should you spend on Facebook ads?.

How to set it up yourself in Ads Manager#

Meta's Ads Manager builds an ad in three layers, and each layer holds one of your decisions.

  1. The campaign holds the goal. Choose the goal closest to what you will count, such as visits to your booking page. You pick calls or messages in the next layer.
  2. The ad set holds how people reach you, who sees it and the budget. Pick where the enquiry happens: a form, a call, a message or your website. Set the location to the area you serve, by city, by postcode or by a radius around a pin. Leave the rest broad. Set a daily budget you can keep up for a month.
  3. The ad holds what people see. Add your own photo and one line that says what you do and where. If you picked a form, you build the form here.
  4. Publish, then leave it for a week. Meta reviews the ad first, and the first days are uneven while its system learns.

Where Madder fits today#

Madder is an AI agent that sets up and looks after Facebook and Instagram ads for a small business. It reads your website, drafts a campaign, builds ads from photos you upload and approve, and creates the campaign paused in your own Meta ad account.

For a single restaurant or café it is not the right tool yet, for two plain reasons.

  • Madder aims a campaign at a whole country. It cannot aim at a radius around your door today. A café that advertises to a whole country wastes nearly all of the money.
  • Madder counts leads, meaning enquiries. Most restaurant results are visits, which Meta does not see.

Madder may fit a food business that sells online and ships country-wide, such as a coffee roaster, a bakery that posts, or a maker of sauces. Shopify's 2026 table of order rates gives food and beverage 4.58%, the third highest of its seven categories. See Ads for a small online shop. For a restaurant, boost a good post, or set the ad up in Ads Manager as above.

Questions people ask#

Do Facebook ads work for restaurants?

They can remind nearby people about a dish, an offer or an event. They work best with a tight area, one clear reason to come and a way to count who came, such as an offer code.

How far around my restaurant should I advertise?

As far as your customers really travel. For a café that is walking distance or your delivery area. For a neighbourhood restaurant it is a short drive. Smaller is usually better.

How do I know if a restaurant ad worked?

Decide before it runs. Count bookings through a link, calls, offer codes shown at the till, or takings on the advertised days against earlier weeks. Likes do not show visits.

How much do Facebook ads cost for a restaurant?

WordStream's 2026 US report gives a typical $0.45 a click for restaurants and food. What a visit costs you depends on how many of those people come in, which only your own count can show.
