For many small businesses, Meta's own tools are enough, and they cost nothing beyond the ads. That is the honest starting point. Meta gives you four free ways to advertise. Each asks for a different amount of your time and knowledge. Madder is for the owner who wants the job done without learning them.
What Meta gives you for free#
| Tool | What it is | What it asks of you |
|---|---|---|
| The Boost button | A quick ad made from a post you already published | A few steps. You choose a goal, an audience and a budget |
| Ads Manager | Meta's full tool for building campaigns | Knowing which objective, meaning the result you want, and which audience and format to choose |
| Advantage+ | Meta's automation inside Ads Manager. Meta says it applies AI across the audience, the placements and the budget. A placement is a spot where an ad can show | You still create the campaign and the ads and choose the amount |
| AI connectors, since April 2026 | A way for ChatGPT, Claude and other assistants to work in your ad account. Meta names no fee, and the assistant may have its own price | Knowing what to ask the assistant for |
What does Advantage+ do?#
Advantage+ is the name Meta gives to its automatic settings. Meta describes them like this:
- Advantage+ audience lets advertisers use Meta's AI to find the audience for a campaign.
- Advantage+ placements help find the most cost-effective places to show the ad across Meta's apps.
- Advantage+ sales campaigns are, Meta says, the most efficient way for advertisers using the sales objective to drive online sales.
Meta's help pages say that if you choose the sales, app promotion or leads objective you will see the Advantage+ setup, and that the manual features are still available.
So Advantage+ handles delivery for you: who sees the ad, where, and how the budget is spread. Meta says it can also adjust your photos and videos. It works inside a campaign you have set up. It does not decide what you should advertise, and it does not tell you afterwards whether the result was good for your business.
Is Advantage+ enough for a small business?#
Often, yes. If you are willing to set up one campaign in Ads Manager, leaving Advantage+ switched on is a sound choice for a small budget. One company that sells a paid AI agent says so itself: AdAdvisor writes that below roughly $1,500 a month of ad spend, Advantage+ alone may be enough (September 2026).
It is enough when:
- you can get through the campaign setup once,
- your budget is small and you run one or two campaigns,
- you are happy to open Ads Manager each week and read the figures.
It is not enough when the setup itself is what stops you, or when you look at Ads Manager and cannot tell what to do next.
What is Meta planning?#
Meta has said it wants AI to do more of this. In January 2026 its newsroom wrote that it is "all in" on using AI to make it easier for businesses to launch and improve campaigns. In June 2025, Marketing Dive reported, citing the Wall Street Journal, that Meta planned to let a brand give a product image and a budget goal and have AI create the whole ad by 2026.
We could not confirm from Meta's own pages that this has shipped. If it does, the free option will get stronger, and you should weigh any paid tool, ours included, against it.
What Madder adds#
Madder is an AI agent that does the ad work around the campaign. It uses Meta's system to deliver the ads. It does not replace it.
| The job | Meta's free tools | Madder |
|---|---|---|
| Drafting the plan | You | You give the link. Madder reads what you sell and the price, and drafts a plan |
| Looking at rivals | You, in the Ad Library | Being switched on in early access. Madder reads a rival's landing page today. Reading their ads from the Ad Library is not connected yet |
| Building the campaign and ads | You, in Ads Manager | Madder builds them from photos you upload and approve, and creates the campaign paused in your account |
| Finding the audience | Advantage+ | Meta's system. Madder sets a country and an age range, and sets the campaign to bring visits to your page |
| Switching on | You press publish | A separate approval from you |
| Watching it | You, when you remember | An optional daily check-up suggests a pause or a budget change when last week's numbers are clear |
| Small changes | You | Optional Autopilot applies cuts, pauses and small raises inside amounts you set |
| Reading results | Ads Manager's columns | Leads and cost per lead, counted only from the actions you confirmed as real enquiries |
Where Meta's own tools are better#
- Local targeting. Ads Manager can aim at a city, a postcode or a radius. Madder aims at a whole country today.
- Ad types and goals. Ads Manager offers forms, calls, messages and catalogue ads, and can aim a campaign at leads or sales. Madder's ads send people to your page, and its campaigns are set to bring visits.
- Price. Meta's tools are free today. Madder is free during early access and will be paid later.
- Track record. Madder is in early access with a waitlist and has no results to show.
How to choose#
- A local business with one location: use Ads Manager with Advantage+ and a tight area. See Running Facebook ads without an agency.
- You only want a post seen: boost it. See Boost post or Ads Manager?.
- You already use ChatGPT or Claude and know what to ask: try Meta's connectors. See Can ChatGPT run my Facebook ads?.
- You sell across a country, have no marketer, and the setup is what stops you: that is who Madder is for. See How Madder works.
Questions people ask#
Is Meta Advantage+ enough for a small business?
Often it is. Advantage+ finds the audience and placements, and spreads the budget, for a campaign you have set up. If you can do that setup once and check the results weekly, a small budget may need nothing more.
What is the difference between Madder and Advantage+?
Advantage+ decides who sees an ad, where, and how the budget is spread, inside a campaign. Madder does the work around it: it reads your page, drafts the plan, builds the ads, creates the campaign paused and can check it daily.
Does Madder replace Ads Manager?
No. Madder creates campaigns in your own Meta ad account, so they appear in Ads Manager like any others. You can open Ads Manager at any time.
Is Advantage+ free?
There is no fee for it. It is a set of options inside Ads Manager, and you pay Meta only for the ads themselves.
