Fifteen minutes, plus DNS propagation if you take that route.
Before you start#
- A business portfolio that holds your ad account (Business portfolio and ad accounts) and full control of it.
- Access to either your DNS provider, your site's file system, or its
<head>template. - Madder cannot do this step: it needs proof placed on your domain by you.
1. Why it matters#
- Conversion events. Meta's Aggregated Event Measurement counts iOS web conversions per domain, and only the business that verified the domain can configure and rank its events. Unverified, your
Leadevent may be ignored on iOS traffic or claimed by another business. - Link editing. Ads that point to a verified domain can have their headline, description and preview image edited. Unverified, Meta locks the preview to what the page declares.
- Ownership. If an old agency verified your domain in its portfolio, they control both of the above until you verify it in yours.
2. Add the domain#
As of September 2026:
- Business settings (business.facebook.com/settings) → Brand safety and suitability → Domains.
- Click Add, enter the root domain without
https://orwww(e.g.example.com), and click Add domain. - Meta shows three tabs: DNS verification, HTML file upload and Meta-tag verification. Pick one.
3. Verify by DNS (recommended)#
- Copy the TXT record shown, which starts with
facebook-domain-verification=. - At your DNS provider add a TXT record on the root domain with that value.
- Wait for propagation (minutes to a few hours), then click Verify domain.
Works for every subdomain at once and survives site redesigns.
4. Or verify by HTML file or meta tag#
- HTML file: download the file Meta offers, upload it to your site's root so it is reachable at
https://example.com/<filename>.html, then click Verify. - Meta tag: copy the
<meta name="facebook-domain-verification" …>line into the<head>of your home page, publish, view the page source to check it is there, then click Verify.
Both depend on the page or file staying in place. Site guides show where the head lives: WordPress, Webflow, Framer.
5. Afterwards#
The domain shows Verified. In Events Manager, under your dataset, you can now configure the web events for that domain; make sure Lead is among them. Madder picks this up on its next sync, nothing to click.
If it doesn't work#
- "Domain already verified by another business" — a former agency or partner owns it; ask them to remove it under their Domains, or verify anyway and contact Meta support through Business Support Home to transfer.
- Verify fails right after adding the DNS record — propagation; check with a TXT lookup tool and retry later.
- Meta tag not found — a caching plugin or CDN is serving the old page, or the tag went into a page other than the root URL.
- HTML file returns 404 — it landed in a subfolder or the platform renamed it; the exact path Meta shows must open in a browser.
- Subdomain only — verify the root domain; subdomains inherit.
